A RECORD MARKET
WOMEN’S PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE Mrs Williams (convener of the patriotic markets) reported to the monthly meeting of the Women’s Patriotic Committee that the National Party had broken all records by raising £475 at a patriotic market. Congratulations were extended to the National Party’s organisers on the success of the effort, and also to the Eveline Women’s Institute for raising £145, and the Oamaru branch of the W.D.F.U. for £52, which was £l2 better than last year’s total. The Townswomen’s Guild and Women’s Club, it was reported, would hold markets in July, and other dates were also being arranged. Miss Kirkness (Mayoress), who was in the chair, received members’ congratulations on her father's re-election as Mayor. There were present Mesdames Meldrum, Woodgate, McDowell, Eiicson, Fox, Misses Marwick, J. B. Wilson, and Cowan, and Mrs Williams (secretary). It was stated that no Lady Newall gift books had yet b-en received, ,but it was hoped that they would arrive shortly. The Parcels Committee reported having given out 57 farewell parcels, and expressed warm appreciation of the assistance given by Mr Ericson at the railway station in this connection. Mrs Ericson was appointed to assist Mrs McDowell with parcels, during the temporary absence of Mrs. Mays. Mrs Woodgate, for the Wool Committee, reported having forwarded 691 articles. A good supply of wool was on hand, said Mrs Woodgate, but knitters were specially needed for polo pullovers, with sleeves, for the Air Force. The next meeting was fixed for July 3.
