GARDENING CLUB

Mr J. Passmore presided over a good attendance of members of the Gardening Club, when Mr Crawford, of the Department of Agriculture gave an instructive address on .the cultivation of strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, currants and other small fruits. The war-time demand for increased production, Mr Crawford said, could be meti by the cultivation of fruits and vegetables by amateur growers supplying their own households. Provided the soil and cultivation were suitable, very profitable crops of small fruits could be produced on small areas. He explained very fully the points in the preparation of the soil, the planting, pruning and training of the various bushes and vines, and the control of the different blights to which they are susceptible. Mr Gilchrist proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker. Among' the exhibits were some fully matured raspberries and strawberries.
