WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL A meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor (Mr E. J. Taylor) and Crs J. Robertson, A. Cleveland, H. C. Tobin, J. C. Mitchell, W. Garton, T. R. Bradshaw, G. C. Rutherford. J. Hill-Scully, J. R. Murdoch, and A. R. McEwan. The estimates for the current year, which were presented by the chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr Robertson). were approved, and it was decided to impose the following rates (last year’s rates are shown in parentheses):—General rate: 6£d (6Jd) in the £; unimproved value. Water rate: lOd (lOd) in the £, annual value, with a recommendation that all business premises be placed on a meter basis. Hospital rate: 9d (9|d) in the £, annual value. Street lighting: Ravensbourne and Rothesay, 4d (4d) in the £; St. Leonards, 6d (6d) in the £; Sawyers’ Bay, 2£d (nil) in the £, all annual value. Loan accounts: £B2OO loan, 2d (Id) in the £; £4OOO, Id (Id) in the £; £3300, 2d (2d) in the £; £BOO, Id (Id) in the £; £II,OOO, l*d (?d) in the £. Refuse: 15s per annum. A circular letter was received from the Dunedin’ Chamber of Commerce regarding the proposal to construct a tunnel to connect Waitati and Sawyers’ Bay. It was stated that the present railway route between Dunedin and Palmerston was unsatisfactory, and that a meeting would be held on June 31 to discuss possible improvements.— The Mayqr and Cr Hill-Scully were appointed delegates to represent West Harbour at the meeting, at which representatives will be appointed to confer with the Minister of Railways (Mr R. Semple). A report was received from the Ravensbourne Fire Brigade, and, on the motion of the Mayor, it was agreed to send a letter of commendation to the brigade on its valuable service to the borough. The report of the Water Committee stated that samples of water at Pryde’s Creek, which would in the future be a valuable source of supply for Sawyers’ Bay and West Harbour, were of good quality. It was reported that the protests lodged with the manager of the Railway Road Services concerning the overcrowding of buses had resulted in some improvement in the position.
