FALL OF CHANGSHA
JAPANESE CAPTURE CITY FIERCE FIGHTING IN PROGRESS (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, June 12. A Chungking message states that the Japanese have entered Changsha, and fierce fighting is in progress. Changsha is about 200 miles south of Hankow on the Hankow-Canton railway. The official Tokio radio says Changsha has been captured. The Chungking correspondent of the Associated Press says powerfully reinforced Japanese divisions opened a
northward offensive along the Han-kow-Canton railway, synchronised with the drive against Changsha. Bolstered by puppet troops, the Japanese have driven 10 miles beyond Kwantung and reached Fengstun. 30 miles to the north of Canton. They also captured Faheih and Tsunkla. General Chennault commented that the new Japanese drive had brought the China war to the greatest pitch since 1938. ! He added that the Japanese had evidently begun building a west wall along the railway to protect the homeland. This design, if achieved, could prolong the Pacific war for years.
