UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETY

The first of a series of recitals by the Otago University Musical Society was given in the Allen Hall on Saturday night. The soloists were Miss Ethel Wallace (violinist) and Mr Geoffrey de Lautour (vocalist). Dr V. E. Galway and Mr R. J. Matthews played the accompaniments. The recital opened with Handel’s Sonata in A major for the violin, Miss Wallace demonstrating her versatility in the melodiousness of the Andante and the strength and vigour of the Allegro. Mr de Lautour sang three songs by Schubert—- “ The Inn,” “ The Minstrel,” and “ The Linden Tree”—the richness of his voice finding expression, especially in the last of the three. Miss Wallace then played Beethoven’s Spring Sonata in F major, her execution of the last movement, the Rondo, being especially impressive. Two songs by Mozart, “ Within These Sacred Bowers ” and “ When a Malden Takes Your Fancy,” and Beethoven’s “In Questa Tomba,” were then presented by Mr de Lautour. The recital closed with Grieg’s Sonata in C minor, played by Miss Wallace.
