NOTES FROM RICCARTON

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. Some of the horses from here should run well at the Dunedin meeting. Gulf Stream is partial to soft going, and there is no reason why he should not run out the journey in the Birthday Handicap, which is expected to -be his first-day mission. Silver Sal is a staying hack, capable of further improvement, while Guile is a promising maiden. Foxhaven is in form, while Rawhamai has run several good races lately without much reward. A suggestion has been made to change one of the steeplechase schooling fences, at Riccarton. There are five obstacles on the circuit, a sod wall and four brush fences, including the double. A request from interested trainers may result in a brush being replaced by a board fence, probably a post and rails. The Robespierre gelding Alcatraz is due back to join T. Donellan's stable. He will be educated for hurdle racing. F. D. Jones, has Iceland Spar in good health. He is quite sound, after doing a lot of exercise while being used as a hack. It is intended to try him as a jumper, and already he has shaped well over a few obstacles on the lead. Gamble, Nurnie, and Saldowa, three of R. Wilson’s team, are being kept going in strong work, in view of engagements at the South Canterbury meeting this month.
