ALLEGED TREASON

A GERMAN DIPLOMAT ARRESTED BY GESTAPO (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Apl. 18. Gestapo officers in Germany arrested for treason Herr von Scherpenberg, who ranks in the German diplomatic service as a legation counsellor, says the Stockholm correspondent of the Daily Mail. Herr von Scherpenberg, whose wife is a daughter of Dr Schacht’s first marriage, was at the time of his arrest head of the Scandinavian Economic Bureau of the German Foreign Office. Stockholm business men believe that Herr von Scherpenberg’s indiscretions prompted last week’te British and American Note to Sweden on the ballbearing question. He is stated to have chattered freely about Germany’s lack of ball-bearings as a result of the Allies’ air raids.
