LOCAL ELECTIONS

POSTPONED BY ONE WEEK AMENDMENT TO BILL (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Apl. 4. The elections of all local bodies are to be postponed by one week by an amending clause inserted in the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill in the Legislative Council to-day. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E Parry, said in the House of Representatives following the passing of the Bill by the Council that when the Bill was in the committee stages on the previous night it had been suggested that the elections of rural local bodies should be postponed for a week until May 27, to enable the completion of the enrolment of voters in view of the extension of the franchise. Since then representations had been made asking for a similar extension for other local bodies. A clause had therefore been inserted in the Bill in the Legislative Council to grant an extra week to all local bodies.

When the Bill was in the committee stages last night Mr J. N. Massey (Oppn., Franklin) and other Opposition members said it would be extremely difficult for local body officers to deal with the enrolments in the time available before . the elections. The only solution appeared to be the postponement of the elections. The Minister then gave a promise to look into the position.
