FEDERAL TAXATION
BILL BEFORE THE SENATE AMENDMENTS DEFEATED (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, Mar. 30. A move to relieve Australian soldiers of income tax has been defeated in the Senate. The move was made as an amendment to the Pay-as-you-earn Taxation Bill, which has now been passed by both Houses of Parliament. Opposition attempts to amend the clauses dealing with the 25 per cent, surcharge and the taxation of employers’ contributions to pension funds were defeated. Pay-as-you-earn taxation will operate from July 1. Widespread protests continue to be made against the 25 per cent, surcharge.
