WOOLLEN TEXTILES

PRODUCTION IN AUSTRALIA COMPLAINTS ABOUT QUALITY (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Mar. 30. •The Federal Cabinet has asked the Australian Tariff Board lor an urgent report on the quality of the war-time woollen textiles being produced by Australian mills. This action follows numerous complaints of the manufacture of shoddy materials without lasting qualities. The board will be asked to decide whether the quality of Australian standard cloth is inferior. If so, it will seek the reasons and a remedy. The board will also advise the Government whether high-quality doubleweft materials can be produced for Australian civilians. Australian mills recently manufactured a quantity of double-weft material for New Zealand. Official statistics just released show that the imports of synthetic piecegoods into Australia rose from 94 square yards in 1939-40 to 1,623,000 square yards in 1942-43. The value of the imports of these goods in 1939-40 was only £7. In 1942-43 it had risen to £244,000.
