THE HUMAN ELEMENT
Sir,—l will take “ Maran-atha’s ” word for the good that the Earl of Shaftesbury did for the poor and downtrodden of his era. The need for reformers was created by the conditions in which people lived and toiled. It is apparent to any student of the historical development of society that from the very early forms of society, the primitive communes, there has been evolving within that stage the embyro future stage. Karl Marx, together with his friend Engels, spent a lifetime studying the historical development of society, and from the conclusions drawn he proved that from the primitive communes there arose the stage known as feudalism. Within the feudalist society the capitalist system grew, and it eventually found outlet in Imperialism. Lenin, basing the building of the U.S.S.R. on the scientic Sqcialism of Marx and Engels, and the readiness of the oppressed peoples of Czarist Russia, has provided a new hope for the progressive forces within society that the next step will not be Fascism, which would be a step from Imperialism, but will be a step forward to Socialism, —I am, etc., D.
