Borough Council. —The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was hedonV, ednesdav evening, the Mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn) presiding Others p Crs G. Melville, J. B. Gray, J. W Keogh, P. W. Gray, J. Thomson (the town clerk), who is overseas, wrote extending good wishes to the Mayor and councillors and expressing appreciation of parcels which he had received. —Two applications for the installation of septic tanks were approved.—The health inspector reported that 26 visits had been made durin fa December and January.—Cr Keogh was appointed to represent the council on the Otago Centennial Celebration Committee.—Cr Anderson moved—that Alfred street be declared a*’ one-way street m order to minimise the risk of accidents. After some discussion, the motion was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor.— In response to the advertisement for the sale of an abandoned car, the highest offer of £5 was accepted.—An allocation of £250 was made for the tar-sealing of streets.—ln his financial report, Cr Keogh stated that for the year ending March 31, 1944, the receipts were estimated at £62 jU 8s 9d (amount to date* £3460 12s 10d), a ' ,d the expenditure was estimated at £BJOj (actual £5701). Accounts amounting to £496 9s 6d were passed for payment. Returned Servicemen.—Mr C. W. Keenan presided over a committee meeting of the Milton-Bruce R.S.A. on Tuesday night. The Dunedin R.S.A. notified ffiat the association would play its part in the forthcoming centennial celebrations, but it was considered too early to make any concrete decisions. Sergeant J. A. Kennard, on behalf of the Reunion Committee in the Middle East, forwarded a photograph of the recent gathering and a copy ot the toast list. It was resolvec, that the photograph be framed. The following remits to, conference were discussed: -a) " That the conference of branches commence at 1 p.m.” (2) “ That all servicemen overseas should be granted free travel for the period of their furlough, with a maximum of 28 days.” Personal.—Miss I. Gibbons has commenced as a probationary assistant on the staff of the Toko D.H.S.-Corporals Allan Cowie and Allan Rekowski have left to attend a special course for A.T.C. n.a.o. s at a northern airport. . „ Valedictory.—Mr and Mrs F. A. Haynes entertained a number of guests at a gift evening at their residence on Friday In honour of Mr Arthur Deaker and Miss Lilian Howard, who are shortly to be married. Items were given Mr H. Rankin, Misses Nola Haynes,. Joan McLean, and Eleanor Bowie. Mrs W. McLean was the accompanist.
