MR ANDREW SUTHERLAND

The death occurred recently of Mr Andrew Sutherland, of Clyth . Braes, Puketeraki, at the age of 86. He was interred at the Waitati Cemetery last Sunday. Mr Sutherland left Scotland with his parents by emigrant ship, arriving in Otago in March. 1861, at the age of two years. The family settled on Beatty Hill Farm, overlooking the entrance to Blueskin Bay, as the Waitati inlet was then called. Mr Sutherland was educated at the Waitati School, and after working for a time in Bagley’s chemist shop he joined a Government survey party working on the Crown Range and Crown Terrace. He later joined the staff of the Seacliff Mental Hospital, rising to the position of head attendant. He was then transferred to the productive side of the institution, acting as farm manager for 30 years. He retired from service at the age of 65, and had since lived at Clyth Braes. The deceased was married twice, his first wife being Miss Ellen Lloyd, of Puketeraki, by whom he had seven children. He is survived by his second wife, Miss Helena Brown, of Oamaru, and their daughter.
