HEAVY SHELLING
ANZIO BEACH-HEAD ALLIES ON DEFENCE COUNTER-THRUST EXPECTED (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 6. There has been little change in tht situation in Italy. On the main Fifth Army front, the Allies are continuing their attack on Cassino, while in Ihe Anzio beach-head area they have consolidated their positions. On the Eighth Army front Allied patrols have been active. This survey of the position is given in to-day’s communique from Allied headquarters. “The Germans are now shelling the beach-head area south of Rome more heavily than ever, apparently in preparation for the counter-thrust by which Hitler promised to push the Allies back into the sea," reports the British United Press correspondent with the Fifth Army. “ There has been more shelling in the last 2 days than in the whole of the previous 14. As many as 700 to 800 German shells have fallen in a single small area in 15 minutes. “ The Germans have also resumed the air attacks on the beach-head,” the correspondent adds. “ Their patrols are also probing our lines, trying to discover the strength of various sectors.”
