ARMISTICE TERMS
AMERICAN MEMORANDA (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 7. The Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, at a press conference, disclosed that the United States was preparing memoranda on the armistice terms to be imposed on defeated Germany by the United Nations.
The Washington correspondent of the Herald-Tribune says it is understood that the American memoranda include demands for unconditional surrender, total demobilisation, the immediate surrender of war criminals for trial near the scenes of their atrocities, and the safeguarding of Hitler and other key Nazis for later punishment by the Allies.
The correspondent adds: “Mr Hull's remarks do not mean that a German request for an armistice is in the offing, since no one seriously believes that Germany will do anything but fight to the end. The preparation for an armistice merely shows that the military authorities are considering all contingencies.”
