TROTTING NOTES

The resignation of Mr G. Paul as handicapper to the New Zealand Trotting Conference on account of ill-health will occasion widespread regret. Mr Paul filled the position with marked ability. Registrations with the New Zealand Trotting Association from January 10 to January 25 include the following:—Barberry, 4yrs, by Gaillard—Rosethorne; Battle. 2yrs, by Swordsman—Slapfast; Golden Hoofs, lyr, by Bill B.—Travis Axworthy mare; Impartial, 3yrs, by Quite Sure—Glenvilie; Indian Lad, 2yrs, by Indianapolis—Gold Meldon; Indian Spinner, 2yrs, by Indianapolis—Goldspinner; Jack’s Lady, 2yrs, by Lucky Jack—Marion Drive; On Top, syrs, by Jack Potts— Horotane; Real Nugget, syrs, by Great Bingen—Real Burton; Sir Archie, syrs, by Ringtrue—Nella Dillon; and Tunisia, 3yrs, by Lusty Volo—Regalare. The granting of a permit to the Manawatu Trotting Club for April 15 means a circuit cf four successive Saturdays in the southern end of the ’North Island. The Hawera Club will hold its meeting on April 8 and 10, and Wellington will follow Manawatu on April 22 and 29. At tlie annual conference of trotting delegates last July strong representations for permits were put forward on behalf of the Manawatu and Methven Trotting Clubs, and the executive promised that if any permits became available these clubs would receive first consideration. Both have now received permission to hold meetings and will provide stakes larger than they have given before. No decision has yet been reached by the Wellington Trotting Club regarding another date In place of its summer meeting, which was to have been held last Saturday and was cancelled because of the railway restrictions. One of the. main difficulties is in securing a date in a period when the Trentham racecourse can be made available. The Wellington Racing Club has a meeting in March, and the Wellington Trotting Club is already scheduled to hold its autumn meeting on two Saturdays in April. The prospect of a winter date for trotting at Trentham may not appeal to the club, and the choice of a day during the autumn has been considerably restricted.
