QUINNAT SALMON
Sir,—Your previous correspondent who writes on quinnat salmon in the Molyneux is somewhat absurd in his statement of “ countless millions ” of salmon going up the river. I would like to ask him if'he has ever seen the fish running for certain. I have seen the lower reaches, below the Paretal punt, alive with fish, but they were trout, as I proved. The first run of quinnat Is supposed to be in January, and they certainly do go up the river, but they are rarely seen. I have only picked up one or two dead fish, and various remains of bird-eaten fish. I make bold to state that if a salmon net was stretched across the mouth your correspondent would be lucky If he meshed 10 or a dozen salmon. Some fine large trout would be caught, but salmon —no. These fish are rough on trout, as most anglers know, and the Acclimatisation Society should be as keen to get them cleaned out as to clean out the eels. Hoping more Information comes forth,—l am, etc., Koau Branch. Stirling, February 4.
