TRENTHAM TRACK WORK

(Special) n WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. Wellington Cup candidates provided the highlights of the traniing work at Trentham this morning. The weather was overcast and bleak and the horses had to. run the closing two furlongs of their trials into a strong wind. As the grass, tracks are all very hard the whole of the, work was done on the plough. Kindergarten (Spratt)’i and , Lou . Rosa (Keesing) ran a mile in lmin- 43- 2-ssec after taking 14sfec for the first furlong and 52 3-ssec for the first half-mile. Kindergarten had the inside running and the better of the weights, and comfortably shaded his opponent. Nothing definite is known about kindergarten’s’programme, and it may be near the day before a decision is reached" whether he 'will' takA his place in the Cup field. Tara King had-Maharajah -for a- companion over a mile, but they did not apply the pace until they reached the seven. They came home from that post in lmin 33 4-ssec. Tara King moved freely enough and present intentions are to run him in the Wellington ..Cup. J. Garth may ride him. Palfrey and Piastre ran a mile and a-quarter, taking lmin 44 4-ssec for the last mile. Piastre ran about a lot in the final furlong, and Palfrey always had his measure. The Southerner looks in splendid order for his Cup engagement, in which he will be ridden by A. Messervy. The Telegraph Handicap candidate Master Dash had the two-year-old Well Armed for a mate over- half a mile, which they covered easily in 53 2-ssec.. . Palora, last year’s Telegraph winner,' going alone, ran half a mile in 52sec,. finishing resolutely. She will be ridden on Saturday by L. J. Clutterbuck. Foreign Coin, conceding a lot of weight, beat Foxcatcher over six furlongs in linin’ 19 4-ssec, the last half in 52sec. Foreign Coin has built up into a solid horse, but he has never shown good form on anything but soft tracks. For a high-weight horse Glaciate, who looks solid and well, returned good time to break 52sec for half a mile when accompanied by the unraced Foxlight four-year-old Nanook. Glaciate won a double during the holidays and is in good order for his Wellington engagements. Voltaire, another high-weight candidate, easily beat Polario over seven furlongs in lmin 36sec, the first half in 50 3-ssec. Voltaire worked smoothly and could have improved on the time With a more suitable companion. Battle Shield and Gala Song, two-year-olds in P. Spratt’s team, ran half a mile in 52sec, with Battle Shield doing a little better than the filly at the close. Gynette, a half-sister to Centrepoise, was going very evenly beside Hormuz at the end of half a mile in 51 2-ssec, the last' three in 39sec. She will be ridden in the Fitzherbert Handicap by J. Garth. Killeymoon, who looks bright and muscular, was out exercising in the centre. He is a lightly-fleshed horse who does not require much galloping. S. Green will ride him in the Telegraph Handicap. P. Ryan’s two-year-olds, Colais and Golden Barb, ran a smart half-mile in which thev broke 51sec! Colais is a good mover and shaded the filly nearing the post. He will .be ridden in the Wellington Stakes by W. F. Ellis. V. J. Sellars will ride Golden Barb in the Fitzherbert Handicap.

Arrivals to-day from Auckland were Lord Chancellor, Royal Merit, Jeff, Plassida, Beau Vaals, Sweet Biscuit, Nawab. and Phaleron.

P. Burgess, who was Injured in a fall on the final day of the Auckland meeting, has returned home. He was out to-day supervising the work of his team, but is still sore and extensively bruised, and is unlikely to do any riding at the Wellington meeting. Amorlad was scratched for the Wellington Cup at 11.10 a.m. to-day.
