TROTTING NOTES
By Sentinel
The death is reported of Mr H. L. August, who acted as a steward for the Wellington Trotting Club for nearly 30 years. He raced many horses, including Frisco Lady, Frisco Boy, and Zolock Palm. Good fields are likely to be seen out in the light-harness events at the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting. It is interesting to recall that The Wizard, one of the most notable trotters of his day, came from the Central Otago district. The Wizard won ‘the Cromwell Derby, and after a long spell necessitated by breaking a small bone in his leg, reappeared and became a champion trotter. Mr George Rivers, who, in the saddle, was associated with The Wizard, will probably be ampngst the spectators at the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting. The Wizard is probably the only galloping classic winner in the world to develop into a crack trotter. He was got oy Bucephalus, who also sired Wanderoo, the first trotter to win In Bmin for three miles. Wanderoo also came from the Central Otago district.
