TARAWA CASUALTIES

LESS THAN ANNOUNCED NEW YORK, Jan. 6.

The total casualties of marines in the Tarawa landing are somewhat less than the previously announced figure of 3583, said the Director of Navy Relations, Captain Lovette. Casualty reports still coming in show that some men presumed dead have turned up alive, and others reported missing have been found many miles distant with other units. ‘

The Navy Department announced that there were 269 survivors from the escort carrier Liscombe Bay, sunk on November 24. Her total complement is undisclosed, because she was a new type of ship, about which the Japanese had presumably scant knowledge.
