A GREAT CONTRAST
Sir, —It was intensely Interesting to read the outspoken remarks of Brigadier L. M. Inglis in this morning’s Daily Times. He sees things just as they are both at the fighting front and in our fair Dominion. No wonder that he is struck with the indifference of many poeple. “ They do not realise what a grim business warfare is,” he declared. That is proved by the way precious time and money have been wasted at the races. Your second article in to-day’s paper should be carefully pondered. Surely by its actions and its policy our Socialist Government encourages the growth of the “ squander bug ”! What a great contrast there is between Mr Churchill and all our fighting forces on the one hand and the racing men in New Zealand on the other hand! The gambling mania is a curse to our country; It is immoral and degrading in the extreme. Brigadier Inglis tells us that during his service abroad he met many famous men and had been in conversation with Mr Churchill a number of times. "He is a great man, and all his time his mind Is on his job,” he said. Only to-day an English magazine arrived by post. On the front cover is a picture of six English munition workers. Behind them in the distance other workers are to be f=een. The title of the picture is " Workers Behind the Lines.” Of these six workers in the foreground three are men, two by no means young. All have a fixed, resolute, determined look on their faces: their minds are on their job. Of the other three two are boys, earnestfaced boys; the .sixth is a sweet-faced, tired-looking young woman. They all look as if they did not have enough to eat. History repeats itself. We have a great contrast, also in the times of the Judges. Some of the people " jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field ” while others took life very easily at home. There is a warning, too, in that up-to-date book for all so-called conscientious objectors.—l am, etc., Maran-atha.
