CLUTHA SHOW

SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE L*GHT HORSES OUTSTANDING The annual summer show of the Clutha and Matau Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held yesterday, and, as usual, it attracted a large attendance. There was an outstanding showing of light horses, and entries in the competitions were better than they have been for some years. A display of agricultural implements, though not large, provided added interest for the visitors, and during the afternoon items were given by the Balclutha Band, which has been revived after a lapse of many years. The sheep and cattle sections, except for the Romney Marsh and Friesian classes, which carried South Island championships. did not generally attract large entries. There, was an excellent parade of Friesians, all the cattle being well forward and shown in the pink of condition. The champion cow was a typical representative of this popular breed. Most of the sheep which were shown appeared to be further forward than those seen at the Taieri Show last week. They were in prime condition and the wool was in first-class order. After the Romneys, the crossbreds made the strongest showing and were excellent examples of the result of careful selection and good breeding. The entry of pigs was disappointing, only one class having more than two entries. Mr W. R. Christie won three championship awards in this section. Some fine draught horses were seen in the Clydesdale ring. The principal awards went to Mr A. Carruthers. the well-known Middlemarch breeder, with Messrs AlFson Bros. next. The thoroughbred and pony classes produced good competition within a limited range of entries. In the pony ring H. S. Latta,’Fred Ford, Roma Hood. Fraser Blackie and Billy Duncan secured several prizes. War conditions have brought about a revival in the popularity of the hack, and some excellent young saddle stock was exhibited. The baking and produce sections were smaller than in othfer years. Mrs E. Morris was the most successful of the butter makers, and Mrs T. Davis, Mrs T. H. Clearwater, Miss M. S. Norman, Mrs \V. A. Soper, and Mrs J. B. McKinley were prominent in the prize lists in the baking section. „ The following is the prize list for those sections in which there was the strongest competition:— Friesian Cattle Judges: Messrs W, Y.
