SAWYERS’ BAY
OBITUARY Tlie death occurred recently at his residence. Sawyers’ Bay, of Mr John James Abernethy, at the age of 78. Mr Abernethy was born in the Shetland Islands, and arrived at Port Chalmers as a lad of 13. He followed fishing pursuits for several years, and was a proficient oarsman, being associated with the late T. R. Wright in several major rowing events. He was later engaged in farming in the Catlins district. He married Miss Mary Drake, by whom he is survived. There are three sons and four daughters. One of the sons, Thomas, is a prisoner c-f war, and another, George, recently returned from service overseas. Mr Abernethy was of a quiet, unassuming nature and was held in high esteem by the residents of Sawyers’ Bay, among whom he had resided for the last 23 years. SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED Private Arthur E. Colson was recently entertained by a number Of friends and presented with d suitably engraved leatherette writing companion by the residents of Sawyers’ Bay. He expressed his thanks for the good wishes conveyed and for the acceptable present. Armourer Chris Perry was entertained at his parents’ home on Monday evening last. Mr W. T. Beagley presented him with a writing companion and expressed the best wishes of the residents of the district. Mr L. R. Ellis referred to Armourer Perry’s good record in sporting activities, particularly on the cricket field, and Mr T. Harkness also paid a tribute to the guest. DR BARNARDO’S HOMES The annual collection by the Sawyers’ Bay School children for Dr Barnardo’s Homes resulted in over £l2 being subscribed.
