CUTTING OF TREES

CONDEMNED BY BUSINESSMEN Criticising the cutting down and lopping of trees in the Oamaru Public Gardens, Mr E. D. Watts, at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night, said that the gardens were being ruined. Some of the finest trees which had been planted 70 years ago were being cut down. The electric power lines should never have been put where they were. The president of the chamber (Mr if. S. Stevens) said that a choice would have to be made between the trees and the power lines. The trees were a great attraction in the town. The lopping of the trees was necessary, but it should be done in the proper manner. Mr Watts said the destruction of the trees would prove a great loss to Oamaru. As they were there before the power lines, they had a right to remain. On Mr Watts’s motion, it was decided to write to the Borough Council emphasising the irreparable loss to the town caused by the lopping of the trees in . the gardens, and stating that as the powei lines were erected after the trees were fully grown, there was no liability on the council.
