Last Effort is engaged in three races at The handicaps for the New Zealand Cup are due to appear on October 27. Hearth has been elected favourite foi the Stewards’ Handicap, to be run at G FMr Trial is in an isolated position as favourite for the Farewell Handicap at G Notary, who showed pace at Timaru, is a three-year-old brother to Monetary. The entries for the five major events to be run at the Auckland Cup meeting total 283, compared with 302 last season. The Gore Racing Club appears to have discarded races over a mile. This is a wise decision, as the mile start is too near the turn out of the straight. Honest Sal, who finished second to High Play at Timaru, is a fiver-year-old by Sal-magundi-Honest Maid, by PaladinHonesty, by Martian. Pride of Mossburn and Te Anau Lass are bracketed in the Novice Handicap at Gore, Red Hope and Red Prize in the High-weight Handicap, Macedoine and Sascha in the President’s Handicap, and Riding Home and Sascha in the Farewell Hack Handicap. Some newscomers figure in the field for the Novice Handicap to be run at the Gore meeting.
