MEAT FOR CIVILIANS
RATIONING IN AUSTRALIA (£ec. 0.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Sept. 22. Civilian rationing of meat by coupon will be introduced in Australia in the near future. The ration will at least equal Canada’s 21b for each person a week, which is much higher than in most of the countries at war.
Meat production in Australia is not keeping pace with the demand. The latest estimates indicate that next year’s requirements, based on normal civilian consumption, will be one-third higher than the probable production. The authorities emphasise that Britain needs every ounce of meat that Australia can send her, and huge quantities have to be supplied to the fighting forces in the South-west and South Pacific. Australian and American soldiers eat about lib of .neat each day.
