Golf—The second round of the Knockout Competition on Saturday resulted: W. L. Dodds a bye; L. Edwards beat D. M, Frengley; T. M. Thompson beat G. Kelly; H. Grace beat E. Barnett; L. V. Fowler beat W. Sceats; J. Clark beat J. G. Richards; A. Marshall, a bye. A. Watson has to play G. Ashcroft. The results of the Stableford Match were: R. J. Guest 20— 11—31, L. Egarr 16—14—30, W. R. Scott 10—18—28, D. M. Frengley 17—9—26, O. R. Throp 14—12—26, L. Edwards 15—11—26, W. Sutherland 9—17—26, C. M. Maguire 8—18—26, W. L. Jolly 16—9—25, N. R. Jefferson 6—18—24. The first round for the Thompson Cup will be played on Saturday next. Rugby Football.—The Clinton senior team failed to put in an appearance at Balelutha on Saturday, and after a long wait the gate money was returned to the spectators. Clutha Juniors went to Kaitangata and were defeated by 12 points to 3 points. Crescent seniors defeated Toko at Milton in a Glenthorne Cup match by 15 points to nil. There was no other match at Milton, as High School defaulted to Toko juniors. The School team played at Gore on Friday, and could not field a team two days in succession. The draw for Saturday is: Clinton v. Crescent I, at Kaitangata; Toko I v. Clutha, at Milton, Toko v. Clutha Juniors, at Balelutha, 3 p.m.; High School v. Crescent Juniors, at Kaitangata, at 2. R.S.A. Function.—The R.S.A. held a welcome social for returned men of the 2nd Expeditionary Force in the Masonic Hall on Saturday night. Mr A. Maxwell (president) was in the chair. Messrs A. McHutchon, W. F. Forrester and D. Forsyth, of the Dunedin R.S.A., and Mr J. A. Roy, M.P., were also present, together with the Mayor (Mr J. R. Copland) and Mr C. F. Shgw (Clutha County Council) There was ari attendance of fully 110 returned soldiers, as well as 20 soldiers now on furlough from the Middle East. A lengthy list of toasts was honoured, and tire Milton Brass Band was in attendance to assist in the musical part of the programme. Piping and Dancing Association.—The Balelutha branch of the South Otago Piping and Dancing Association held a successful gathering in St. Mark’s Hall, on Saturday night, when there was a large attendance, the occasion being " parents’ night.” The president (Mr E. A. Paterson) welcomed the. parents and visitors from Kaitangata and Milton. A programme of songs and dances was highly appreciated, the following contributing:—Massed Highland fling, by 25 juvenile members, who also gave a sword dancer Irish jig, sean triubhais, and Highland reels; national reel, G. Munro (representing England), A. Mcßride (Ireland), June Elliott (Scotland), Betty Thomson (Wales); step dances, Beverley Miller, Coralie Illingsworth; songs, Noeline Boyd, Heather Houliston. Daphne Carmody; Russian ballet dance, Noeline Ridgwell and Barclay Smaill; skipping rope dance, P. Paterson, M. Mcßride, B. Thomson, G. Munro, N. Ridgwell, P. Smaill; sailors hornpipe, A. Warnock, B. Smaill, A. Mcßride, Q. Munro, Betty Thomson; waltz clog dance, H. Warnock, N. Ridgwell, B. Thomson, A. Mcßride, G. Munro. During the evening demonstration dances were given by Miss Jean Dow and Miss Norma Marshall. The pipers were Messrs A. Balloch, W. Illingsworth and Duncan Macfarlane. After" supper Mr J. Thomson (vice-president) thanked the pipers, visitors and performers. Personal—Mr George Ashcroft, Clutha County clerk, returned yesterday from a fortnight’s stay in Wellington, during which time he attended the New Zealand Counties’ Conference.
