APPEALS TO COMMITTEE Tiie Industrial Man-power Appeal Committee —Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), H. H. Gillard, and S. D. Macpherson—held a sitting yesterday to hear appeals against directions of the man-power officer (Mr E. A. Selman). Alvan Stuart Harris appealed ■ against direction to accept employment with the Kaitangata Coal Company as a trucker.— The appellant said he was a seasonal worker at the freezing works and was at present employed at McLeod Brothers.— The appellant's mother said she. was a widow and was not in good health. —Mr J. G. Henderson, of the Kaitangata Coal Company, said his company could not meet all the demands for coal. It was short of 30 truckers, and the shortage of labour was the chief cause of the drop in production.—The appeal was disallowed, the appellant to be permitted to return td the freezing works at the commencement of next season. Albert Edward Callaghan, a single man, appealed against direction to the Kaitangata Coal Company as a trucker.—The appellant, a seasonal worker at the freezing works, said he had been discharged from the army because of defective eyesight.
