RATES LEVIED At a special meeting of the Green laland Borough Council, which was held last night, there were present the Mayor (Mr G A Orange), Crs J. A. cauery, T M Robson,' T. L. Mason. W. D. Wynn, L. Burgess, J. Boomer, D. Copland, R. B. Rennie, and T. M. McAhan. It was decided to give public notice of the council’s intention to strike the following rates for 1943-44, the rates for 1942-43 being given in parentheses.—General rate, 2s Id (2s 2d); hospital rate, lOd (81d)' water rate. 9d (9d); special''rate /(draiAage loans), llid (llid); sanitation fee, £2 12s (£2). . .. _ c Submitting these recommendations, which were adopted, the town clerk (Mr R. J. K. Gillies) said that the total rate this year would be 4s 7id in the £ compared with 4s 7d in the £ last year. Owing to’ a further increase in the hospital levy of approximately 21 uer cent., it was necessary to increase the hospital rate by lid to lOd in the £ To offset this increase, a decrease of’ Id in the £ in the general rate had been, recommended. The sanitation fee had been increased, but this affected only those ratepayers who had not yet instilled drainage on their properties. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the council, on the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided to make a grant of £SO to the GrCen Island Municipal Band ' for the current year. ‘ *’ The Finance Committee reported that, in reply to the ’ council’s letter relating to the Increased hospital levy, the Minister of Health (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) had advised that serious consideration would be given to the question.
