ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT Curious,” Oamaru. Norse was scratched at 11.20 a.m., and Sascha at 11.27 a.m. on the day of the races. Although Dominate dropped out of the Birthday Handicap after the acceptances his absence is not due to anything being wrong with him. Only two of this season’s two-year-olds have won over £IOOO- P 1 ® 21 '®.. Pa '’ Man’s Pal, is top of the list with £1695. and Sea Spi, by Phaleron Bay, is next with £1540. Spendthrift beat Gay Boa by 25 lengths in the Great Western Steeples, when giving him 101 b, and again in the Riverton Steeples when giving 211 b. In the Wmgatui Steeplechase the margin became increased to 311 b, or lib more than in the Otago Steeples. Amorlad is now being hailed as the Kindergarten of the south, and lauded as being equal to or better than Royal Lancer. This opinion seems to require some modification when form is subjected .to analysis. In the Great Autumn Handicap Royal Lancer 10.3 (third) beat Kevin 7.22 into fourth place. In the Birthday Handicap Amorlad 9.4 finished five lengths in front of Kevin B.ll—a considerable difference from the margin between Royal Lancer and Kevin at Riccarton. Possibly Kevin would have been closer up at the .finish but for losing ground, as on previous occasions, in the early part of the race, but the fact remains that Royal Lancer gave him 421 b and a beating in the Great Autumn Handicap. Amorlad was worked twice at Wingatui prior to winning the Birthday Handicap, With his trainer up he worked over rather more than a circuit at a sound half pace. On the eve of the meeting he was worked over the same ground, but with a stronger finish. Some horses may require stronger winding-up gallops, but, assuming that they are fit and ready to race before arriving at Wingatui, final gallops against the watch may leave a race on the track. It is. of course, a trainer’s business to know his horses and how they are doing in the stable, where the key of track work hangs on the feed-box. Away back in 1901 A. McKay won the Canterbury’ Champagne Stakes on Cruciform when attached to the late R. J. Mason s stable, and apparently he kept his eyes and ears open when at school under the tutelage of the Wizard of Yaldhurst. Amorlad s win in the Birthday Handicap is not McKay’s first success in the race, as he won on Magdala in 1914.
