BALCLUTHA

Borough Council.—The monthly meeting was attended by the Mayor (Mr -J. R. Copland) and Crs J. T. Walter, W. Kean, James Wood, J. L. Gormack, .D. Lattimore, Ivan Jenkins, D. Hastings, and H. Bower.—The report of the treasurer showed receipts for the current year at £l7lO 6s 3d and expenditure £1282 18s 6d. The district fund showed a debit balance of £691 16s Id.—The commissioner of transport wrote on the subject of drivers failing to keep to the left, and stating that the matter had been referred to the transport superintendent, who would take steps to see a stricter enforcement of the law.—Cr Kean moved that a letter be written to the commissioner that the council's complaint was a general one relating to main highways, and this was carried.—lt was decided, on the motion of Cr Gormack, that the council should regain control of the sports ground.—Dissatisfaction was again expressed with the Balclutha telephone service, and a deputation comprising Crs Walter and Jenkins was appointed to wait on the local postmaster.—The secretary of the South Otago Hospital Board wrote enclosing the estimates for the year, the amount of the levy payable by the council being £1270 A sharp discussion ensued, and it was decided to support the proposal of the Milton Borough Council that capital expenditure should be financed to a greater extent out of loan money. Personal.—Mr A. L. Cameron, town clerk, was entertained at supper by the Mayor and councillors on Wednesday night' after the meeting. Miss Vera Fryer, the new town clerk, was also present. The Mayor made complimentary reference to Mr Cameron’s work during the six months he had been in the council’s employ. Before leaving for Picton, Mr Cameron was the recipient of a presentation from the day staff of a handsome pipe. Mr R. Briscoe made the presentation.
