COMMUNITY SING

OPENING OF SEASON The first community sing 'of the 1943 season was held at the Strand Theatre yesterday, before a large audience. The singing was well up to previous standards, and many popular favourites were enjoyed. Several new numbers were also introduced, including “ Good Luck to You All,” a composition by My Ernest McKinlay, which was sung by his niece, Miss Ngaere Brown, and the new hymn, “In Time of Trouble,” the words of which were composed by the late Mr W. F. Warner. A special attraction of the sing was the appearance of Miss Bertha Rawlinson and her Troubadours, who sang a bracket of numbers. The proceeds of the entertainment will be devoted to the sick and wounded, and prisoners-bf-war funds. The following donations and goods v/ere received or promised: £s—“Anonymous,” Mrs H. Grindley, weekly; £2 9s—Salvation Army ladies and girls of Caversham;, £l—Mrs Chapman, Mrs Wynn (Magdala street), “Anonymous,” E.M., A. A. Sutherland, "Wellwisher” (North-East Valley), 354 Highgate, J. McA., “In As Much As ” (Kew), M.B. (Clyde Hospital); 10s— “Dad and Dave”; 6s—Miss Artlett (sale of flowers): ss—“Widow’s Mite”; 2s 6d Highland women, Mr Jarrett; 3s—Normanby (weekly); 4s—Hymn, for Ngaere Brown’s singing; £1 2s—Shawls (mother of soldier); doll, Mrs F. Grindley, sox, flowers, frpm Jackson street, St. Kilda, flowers from Betty, of Anderson’s Bay; goods, Mrs Bolton and Mrs J. McGeorge; stockings from “ Two Friends ”; flowers and bantams from Mrs Gieseler. The collection amounted to £4O.
