In her last four starts Riding Home has won twice and gained a third placing. Platform is a half-brother to Passaform, Tauramai, Charmaine, and Rin Tin Tin. The Solicitor-General gelding Fair Trial, who won at Invercargill, is a four-year-old half-brother to Wild Career. Evans Head burst a blood vessel in the Hamilton Hurdles and was pulled up. His grand-dam was by All Black. - Taxpayer fell at the first flight in the Kildare Hurdles at Christchurch, but has since shown improvement in his schooling. In the Timaru Cup, Arctic Dawn 8.6 beat St. Cloud 7.6 by a head. In the Birthday Handicap they meet again at the same margin. , x Nightcalm 9.9 ran second to Colonel Rouge 10.9 at Invercargill, and meets the latter on 71b better terms in the Otago Hurdles. Heidelberg was third with 10.2, and meets the winnter on 81b better terms. Strip has trained on well, although treated mostly to a nursing preparation. He has also schooled attractively over hurdles. , _ l- On the score of breeding Shadow Boy may develop into a jumper. He was got by Te Monanui from Pax, by All Red— Soberside, by Obligado—Broadside, ,by Goldsborough. I The/Nightmarch gelding Edward and the Gustavo gelding Timber Topper both show promise over fences. Edward was unplaced at Oamaru over jumps, but Timber Topper has not appeared in public. It is said that,Bashful Lady stopped in the Oamaru Wihter Cup owing to oeing galloped on. The mishap probably occurred about the home turn as she was going well up to that stage of the race. Gay Boa and Edward shaped well in a school on Thursday afternoon. Edward is a four-year-old gelding by Nightmarch —Battle Queen, by Paladin. ‘Timber Topper also gave a pleasing display in a school over fences. • Brackets on the qard for the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting are:— Colonel Rouge and Anglo-Irish, in the Otago Hurdles: Noko and Anglo-French in the Otago Steeplechase; and Rawhairiai and Blissful Lady in the General Freyberg' Handicap. Chat has been raised 31b for the Great Northern Steeplechase, but as the element of luck entered into his win in the Te Rapa Steeples, it seems plenty. The Cardinal had the race won when.he slipped into the second last fence. When Heidelberg won the Spreydon Hack Hurdles at Riccarton with 9.10 he bgat Native Song 11.6, Rockery 9.13„ and several others, including Strip 9.10 and Phalanx 9.0, and on that form should help to make an interesting race in the Otago Hurdles. A big, field ft likely to go to the post for, the Trial Stakes, and one or two are mentioned as likely winners, although they have no public form to recommend them. Fairy Godmother may start favourite as she ran second at the Wellington spring meeting over five furlongs, and in her last start finished third in the Champagne Stakes to John o’ London and Hurry Home, four lengths away in lmin 12sec. At present a field of 16 is engaged in the General Freyberg Handicap. Compeer may not be quite ready. In his last start Fleet Street 8.7 was second to Royal Chorus 9.5 over seven furlongs at Invercargill. Mauretania won the Templeton Handicap with 7.22 in lmin 10 3-ssec when Rawhamai 7.2 was unplaced. ' At Ashburton Night Pal 7.13 was second to Sham Boy 8.1, with Rawhamai B.7ithird and Mauretania 9.0 fourth. Rawhamai now meets Mauretania on 11b worse terms over a furlong less ground. Symbol 7.13 won at 1 Waimate when Bali 7.13, King'Gustavo 7.4, and Mauretania 7.8 were unplaced. Islay Downs may not be ready. Blissful Lady and Top Row finished third and fourth to Royal Chorus and Fleet Street at Invercargill, Prince Shad is coming on and galloping freely, Bali is smart and acts well on soft ground, and is usually smart out of the barrier. Banco was fourth with 8.6 to Prudentia 7.8, Ranji 7.12, and Papette 7.11 in the Gimcrack Handicap, won in lmin 11 3-ssec, and won at Oamaiu with 8.8 in lmin 26 l-ssec. He may .be one of the best of the lightweights. Princess Myosotis won at the Beaumont meeting. Dark Olga has not won since last season, and Cruden Bay has won three times and ran third in 10 starts this season. Hen last win was at Riverton over seven furlongs in hack company. i
