EL ALAMEIN CLUB

OPENING CEREMONY (N.Z.E.F. Official. News Service) (Rec. 9.15 p.m.) CAIRO, May 27. New Zealand was represented by Lieutenant-general Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg, and senior officers, and New Zealand pipe and brass bands were in attendance, at the opening of the El Alamein Club in Cairo. A club fund realising £41,000 was found in a week to establish the forces’ institution as a token of appreciation of the stand by British and Dominion troops at El Alamein and the successful battles which commenced the Axis retreat from North Africa. Among the many amenities provided by the club will be a newly-formed sports stadium. Part of the El Alamien Fund will also be devoted to the provision of an officers’ convalescent home at Tripoli, and the balance will be used in providing a permanent endowment fund to purchase and maintain a disabled soldiers’ home in England, known as the El Alamein Home.
