GIFT FOR MR CHURCHILL
PEN FOR PEACE TREATY (P.A.) ' .WELLINGTON, May 28. Mr W. Perry. M.L.C., president of the R.S.A., at the conference yesterday handed to the High Commissioner for the tJnited Kingdom in New Zealand, Sir Harry Batterbee, an ink stand and pen which are to be presented to Mr Churchill. Mr Perry expressed the hope that Mr Churchill would be able to use it to sign the peace treaty when peace had been won. “The only condition we attach to the gift,” Mr Perry said. “ is one we know to be acceptable to him—that no peaci treaty wijl be signed with this pen unless it provides for the unconditional surrender of our enemies.” The ink stand is a handsome object, made of totara knot, Waihi silver, and pt.ua shell, and is the work of disabled New Zealand soldiers. It is inscribed: “To the Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill, with admiration for your services to the British Empire from the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, May, 1943.” -
