RECORD COLLECTION

PATRIOTIC APPEAL £ISOO TAKEN IN STREETS' The amount contributed towards the appeal held in Dunedin yesterday for the sick and wounded and prisoners-of-war relief funds included a record street collection. The chairman of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Mr Charles Smith) stated that tne contributions received by the collectors in the streets totalled £ISOO. a sum greatly in excess of that taken in any .previous street appeal in. the city, and he’ attributed this to the sympathetic attitude of the general public towards those servicemen who had suffered injury or had been taken prisoner while fighting for their country. Mr Smith added that the donations received during the past few days brought the total response to the appeal to over £3700. The number of large subscriptions received from the next-of-kin of prisoners-of-war in appreciation of the council’s services was a notable feature of the appeal, iMr Smith added, and he expressed his appreciation to all .who had assisted in the effort, which was the first of its kind undertaken by the'council. Gratitude to the 700 collectors who were on duty during the day was expressed by the publicity officer for the appeal (Mr L. H. Frude), who referred to the number of cheques, ranging in amounts from £ls to £IOO, which were placed in the boxes, and also to the numerous large subscriptions received during the week. A cheque for £SOO from Messrs Cadbury Fry Hudson, Ltd., and a further £2OO from the City Corporation employees were the largest contributions. The chairman of . the Dunedin-St. Kilda Patriotic Committee '(Mr A. C Cameron) last night expressed the thanks of the committee to all who had supported the appeal.
