Mr and Mrs D. S. Bain, of 31 Dec street, Oamaru, have received advice from their son, Gunner A. S. Bain, that he is not seriously wounded. Mr Walter Sinton left yesterday for Palmerston North to take up the position as manager for Messrs Charles Begg and Co. in that city. Mr O. G. Thornton has been appointed district engineer of the Public Works Department at Auckland in succession to Mr F. S. Dyson. Mr Thornton, who has been with the department for 35 years, has been connected with many important railway and other construction works in the North and South Islands. The appointment of Mr L. F. Smith as Deputy Chief Postmaster at Christchurch in succession to Mr D. J. Lattimore, who retired last month, has been announced. Mr Smith commenced his career at Port Chalmers in 1914, and after serving in Dunedin was transferred to the Directorgeneral’s office, Wellington, in 1921. In 1922 he returned to Dunedin, serving in the clerical and postal branches. He became a staff inspector at the General Post Office, Wellington, in 1936, and as-sistant-principal. staff division, in 1938. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were Miss D. Greenwood, Mr R. Stuart, Mr T. J. Donaldson, Mr A. Sears and Mrs F. Waymouth for Christchurch, Miss H. Dickison, Mrs E. F. Harvie, Miss A. Harvie and Miss A. Hanlon for Wellington. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Miss M. S. Hale, Mr and Mrs C. Maudsley, Mrs Monheimer and Mrs C. P. Slack from Wellington, Miss E. R. Ireland. Miss M. E. Winstone. Mr and Mrs C. Firth and Mr R. H. Simpson from Christchurch.
