PRISONER IN ITALY

Y.M.C.A. COMMISSIONER (Special) AUCKLAND, Apl. 30. Previously posted missing, and later reported to be a prisoner, Mr H. W. Shove, who is well known in Auckland as a practising public accountant, is now in a prisoner-of-war camp at Poppi, near Florence, Italy. Giving this information in a letter recently received by his wife', Mrs M. Shove, of Epsom, Mr Shove states that he is billeted in a large house, which is surrounded by beautiful gardens, and that all the men are living under comfortable conditions. He is studying French, German, and Italian, and does .a great deal of reading. On January 1 the Papal Nuncio paid a visit to the camp and conveyed the Pope’s good wishes. Mr Shove had been overseas commissioner in general charge of Y.M.C.A. welfare work for the New Zealand fighting services since early in, 1940. He was mentioned in Lieutenant-general Sir Bernard Freyberg’s despatches for his services to the N.Z.E.F.
