OBITUARY

MR A. H. WILLIAMSON The death of Mr A. H. Williamson, who was well known in educational circles, occurred in Dunedin on Wednesday. Mr Williamson, who was bom in 1875, attended the Dunedin Training College in 1895, and afterwards taught at various country schools. He successively held the following headmasterships, the year of appointment being given in each case:—Roxburgh School (1914), Ravensbourne (1920), Kensington (1924), and Kaikorai (*1928). He retired at the beginning of 1932. Mr Williamson took a keen interest in the New Zealand Educational Institute, and in 1931 was president of the Otago branch. MR TIMARU RHODES Mr Timaru Robert Rhodes, a member of one of Canterbury’s pioneer families, died suddenly at his home, Hadlow Grange, Timaru, on Wednesday morning, aged 55 years. He was the eldest son of the late Mr Ernest Timaru Rhodes, and a grandson of Mr George Rhodes, one of South Canterbury’s pioneer runholders, who with his brother established the Levels Station in 1853. Mr Rhodes was educated at Christs College and at Cambridge University, England, where he also served with the King’s Colonials Regiment. He was past president and patron of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and represented the Levels and district on the Timaru Harbour Board. He was keenly interested in racing, and, with Mr A. S. Elworthy, bred Entreaty, dam of Phar Lap. He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters. MR A. CAITHNESS Mr Alexander Caithness, whose death has occurred at Timaru, was within four months of his 100th year. He was born at Edgell, Forfarshire, Scotland, on August 15, 1843, and arrived at Port Chalmers in the sailing .ship James Nicol Fleming in 1877. In 1881, wheh the Mataura district was being opened up for settlement, he took up a farm of 500 acres at Waimumu, and continued there until his retirement in 1910. After four visits to Scotland he settled in Timaru in 1929. Mr Caithness was married in 1873 to Miss Christina Duthie, who died in 1910. He is survived by four sons and two daughters.
