FALSE EYELASHES
SYDNEY, Apl. 22. In its transfer of women workers to war jobs from other occupations, the Man-power Directorate has encountered the false-eyelash trade. A beauty parlour proprietress in Her Majesty’s Arcade, Sydney, said that hundreds of women came each week for the eyelash treatment. The women had to book four days in advance to get their quota of lashes, which were affixed for a charge of 4s 6d. . The process took about an hour. A hair was stuck to each of the customer’s own lashes. The treatment was effective for about three weeks, after which the artificial lashes began to fall. “ Refills ” cost 2s a sitting, she said. The Deputy Director of Man-power, Mr C. J. Bellemore, said that the falseeyelash trade was the most far-fetched example of luxury spending of which he had heard. He was checking up on the women engaged in the ridiculous work, and would take action to find them something more useful to do.
