DARING ROBBERY
BIG JEWELLERY HAUL SYDNEY, Mar. 12. In one of the most audacious daylight robberies in Sydney for years, a thief stole £BSO worth of jewellery from the locked shop of Joe Davis, Ltd., while the staff was at lunch, Apparently unnoticed by hundreds of passers-by, the thief coolly cut two padlocks from a roller door, walked in, leaving the door open, and ransacked the window. Tfie robbery is believed to have been committed about 12.45 p.m. The jewellery consisted of diamond rings, diamond bracelets, gold rings, and gold watches. Seven of the rings were valued at from £45 to £55 each. The thief also took a £1 note, two 10s notes, and 15s in silver from a shelf in the shop. It is thg practice of the staff of five to close the shop between 12.30 and 1.30 and go to lunch. The first employee to return found the door wide open. He immediately realised something was wrong as usually the door is closed until the return of another employee who has the key. The manageress, Mrs V. Peters, said the thief took practically the whole of a new consignment of jewellery.
