WAR ON MOSQUITOES

SCIENTISTS TRIUMPH SYDNEY, Mar. 12. Malaria among troops at battle stations in Northern Australia is expected to be greatly reduced as a result of the discovery by Commonwealth scientists of a satisfactory repellant to the malaria-carrying mosquito. The discovery is the result of long research and self-sacrificing experiments by the scientists. Over a long period they placed themselves in a sealed tent near the laboratories of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research at Canberra and allowed themselves to be bitten by mosquitoes while they were trying various repellants. When a satisfactory one was found it was taken by one of the scientists to North Queensland and used under service conditions. The new repellant is said not to carry the usual odour of such preparations. Such an odour coming from a large number of troops in jungle conditions would probably disclose their position to the enemy. . , Australian drug companies have been given contracts to make about £24,000 worth of the preparation.
