MINE TRAGEDY

BURIED UNDER FALL OF COAL DEATH FOLLOWS EXTRICATION (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 16. After surviving for more than three hours under a fall of coal at the Birchwood mine at Ohai to-day, Mr John Dahren, a miner, cdlapsed and died immediately after being extricated. He was a married man, aged about 55, and had a family of four children. The accident occurred when Mr Dahren was working at the face. He was completely buried by the fall of coal, but the rescue party was able to maintain conversation with him. Although the coal was removed as quickly as possible, it was 5.30 p.m. before he was brought out. He was obviously weak after his experience, and he collapsed and died almost as soon as he was freed.
