SCHOOL EQUIPMENT

Sir —Mr N. H. Colqqhoun is to be commended for bringing to the notice of the public the fact that, because the department, has so far shirked its responsibility, teachers are paying for the purchase o' - school equipment. Not only do many teachers do this Some actuallv spend much time out. of school hours in making equipment. I have heard of one infant mistress who spends much of her week-end time in this way. and of a group of four or five teachers in one school who nave sometimes averaged four to six hours a week, thus making a present of 25 hours of their labour to the department. Surelv if organisers and such officials recommend the use of new equipment it is the duty of the department to supply it. What has the Educational Institute done to defend its members from such exploitation?—l am. etc., Bcrt - March 12.
