RACING NEWS

By Sentinel

The Irish Lancer gelding Royal Lancer has won £6130 in stakes and cups. The late Mr E. J. Watts’s horses will go under the hammer after the Easter meeting at Randwick. Recent winners at Randwick include Flight, by Royal Step—Lambent, by Tractor—Dazzling Light, by KUbroney from Simper. Flight won a stake of £SOO.

South Island buyers at the yearling sales were in a decided minority, and very few lots will join stables in this island.

Sal was unable to start at Trentham because of a leg injury. She has been nominated for (he Winton meeting, so that apparently the injury was not serious.

W. F, Ellis has not always been the; rider of Royal Lancer in his races. A. E. Ellis had the mount in the Geraldine Cup, which was the first race Royal Lancer had this season.

The smallest price made on the second day of the yearling sales was 45gns for a filly by Inflation. Only nine of lhe entries made less than lOOgns each, and this fact gives an idea of the high quality of the youngsters. The Corcnach youngster paraded on the second day of the yearling sales was produced by Lady Phrosa, by Beau Pere —Phrosa, by Limond —Cowl. The price is said to have been four figures, and apparently it would have been more if the youngster had been sent under the hammer. The Trial Stakes, to be run at the Winton meeting, is for horses that have not won a race at a tctalisator meeting st the time of starting. The weight is 8.0. Twenty-three nominations were received, including several with placed performances. Those with placed form include Prince Leighon, Sailor’s Pal, Silver Sox. Night Lancer, Cross Question. Elvena, and Sister Sal.

Tlie Cromwell Jockey Club's meeting, which is temporarily missing from the racing calendar, is one of the eldest meetings in New Zealand, The Cromwell Jockey Club Handicap was first run in 1874, and the first Cromwell Derby in 1879. The records show that the Cromwell Derby winners include The Witch and Thespis, a horse by Bucephalus. The Witch was bred to Bucephalus and Produced The Wizard, who also won the Cromwell Derby and afterwards became a crack trotter. Bucephalus also sired Wanderoo. the first to trot three miles in eight minutes.

A good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed when the Coronach—Lady Phrosa colt on the catalogue did not appear in the ring at the yearling sales. The colt was sold privately before the sale, it is claimed that once a yearling appears in a catalogue the youngster is then on the public market and should be sent into the ring. A vendor can always protect his interests by placing a reserve price on his stock. It has, however, often been claimed that reserves should be eliminated. This recalls how the imported stallion Paladin was bought at a small figure at the dispersal of the late Mr J. F. Buchanan's stud. The sale was advertised as being " without reserve. When Paladin was under the hammer the bidding halted at 130gns. The auctioneer then announced that the horse would be passed, but a claim made by the late Mr A. G. Hill was recognised, and the son of Polymelus became his property.
