TROTTING NOTES

Absolutely will probably be amongst those fancied for the Vauxhall Handicap. She has 3min' 22 4-ssec and 4min 36 3-ssec against her, but would have to step to a faster mark to win.

Amongst the two-year-olds showing promise in the parade held at Addington on Saturday was Imperial Lady, by Gamble from Imperial Gold, the dam of Gold Bar.

At Addington on January 2 Mankind won in 3min 30 3-ssec, and went 2min 6sec when he ran fourth in the Telegraph Handicap. In the Flying Handicap he is on 3min lsec, with eight others in front of him.

Shadow Maid, who is engaged in the Dunedin Cup, tops the list of winners so far this season with £1975 to her credit. Horsepower has won £990 and Mankind £990. Goid Pot, who is on the front mark in the Dunedin Cup, was placed at Addington in 3min 33 3-ssec, and won in 4min 35 l-ssec. In August, Gold Pot was placed in 4min 24 l-ssec, and his 3min 33 3-ssec would be around 4mln 23sec. Bel Hamed, a filly by U. Scott, attracted attention in the parade at Addington by showing good manners at the barrier and gathering speed that carried her right away from her opponents. The 3min 38sec class for the Vauxhall Handicap is about the slowest that could be found on a metropolitan programme, but as it has drawn a field of 20, it apparently suits a large number of owners. At Waikouaiti Motto won in 3min 26 2-ssec, and others on the front include Communique 3min 23sec, First Royal 2min 48 4-ssec, Aberbond 3min 28 3-ssec, but the most dangerous of the lot may be In the Mood, who won in 3min 20sec at Wellington. The best of the backmarkers may be Courtcard,# who went 3min 16sec at Ashburton, and Navy Lass, who put up 3min 18 3-ssec on the same track. The backmarkers will have to wend their way through 13 starters on the front lines.

If some of those on the front marks in the Flying Handicap are driven to make the best use of the handicap it should be a fast-run race. At Addington on January 1 Kid Wolf won in 2min 9sec and Waipahi was fourth in 2min 9 4-ssecr On the second day of the meeting Waipahi was second to Happy Man, and went 2min 6 2-ssec, and Kid Wolf, in thii'd place, went 2min 6 3-ssec. In the Flying Handicap, Kid Wolf and Waipahi are on 3min 4sec, or rated at 3min Msec. Worthy Need started in 21 races last season for a win and a place in heavy going at Forbury Park. He has been unplaced in his last 13 starts. Great Don was unplaced in two starts . this season, and also in his two races last season. It seems, then, that it will depend on Kid Wolf and Waipahi to set the pace or the backmarkers will be on top of them early on the journey.
