• Vice-Regal The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall, will leave Raincliff to-day for a tour of Central Otago and a visit to Dunedin. Their Excellencies will resume residence at Government House, Wellington, on Sunday, February 7. Mr H. S. Reid left for Wellington yesterday. Mr M. Silverstone left®yesterday for Wellington., Mr L. C. Cheyrte, of the Government Audit Department, left yesterday on his return to Wellington. The Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) was a passenger by the through express yesterday for Christchurch. Mr W. Paterson, secretary of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association, celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday yesterday. At the annual meeting of the Otago and Southland Fire and Accident Underwriters’ Association Mr G. F. Parsonson was elected chairman and Mr J. D. Robb vice-clfairman. Subject to the approval of the Director of Education, Miss A. R. Allum, M.A., Dip. Ed., Auckland, is to be principal of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, in succession to Miss D. N. Allan, who resigned after occupying the position for 17 years. Miss Allum is a daughter of the Mayor of Auckland, Mr J. A. C. Allum. The No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board—Messrs D. C. Cameron (chairman), J. C. H. Somerville, and W. R. Clarke—will leave on Monday next for Central Otago, and in the course of its circuit will hold sittings at Wanaka, Cromwell, Omakau, Alexandra, Ranfurly, Palmerston, and Waikouaiti. The board will return to Dunedin on the afternoon of .Friday, February 5. A British Official Wireless message from Rugby stales that Rear-admiral John H. Edelsten has been appointed a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty and an assistant Chief of the Naval Staff in succession to Vice-admiral Edward L, S. King, who has been appointed principal naval liaison officer to the Allied navies, in succession to Admiral Sir Gerald C. Dickens.

Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr R. H. Gardner, Mrs D. Watt, Miss J. A. Sparkes and Mr Z. Y. Berry for Christchurch; Mr G. S. Kirby, Miss M. Catherwood, Mr A. Wesley, Mr J. A. Race, and Mr C. J. Read, for Wellington, and Master M. Braithwaite for Palmerston North. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Messrs W. lieffernan, A. N. Haggitt, and Sanders from Wellington, Mr V. Matthews, Leading Aircraftman M. L. Clarke, Mr and Mrs Stone, Mr C. D. Farmer, and Mrs L. J. Thorn from Christchurch.
