SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA 'Motion of Sympathy.—At the sitting of the County Council yesterday, Cr Gumming made reference to the loss suffered by many of the county residents who had sons in the fighting forces. At this season their hearts went out to all those people, and he moved that an expression of the council’s sympathy be recorded in ihe minutes. The motion was carried unanimously. Bottle Haul,—A local bottle gatherer collected in Balclutha and despatched to Dunedin this week no fewer than 178 dozen empty beer bottles. It was suggested that when refilled they would play an important part in supplying the Christmas trade. Cattle Plunge Into River.—A drover who had brought a mob of 15 bullocks from Greenfield across the Balclutha traffic bridge, experienced an anxious time when the animals stampeded at the approaches to the sale yards. They jumped a fence, crossed the embankment, and plunged into the Molyneux River. Several swam downstream, and some made land on the north side, while others got ashore on the reserve on the south side, or were carried down to below the railway bridge, where they landed. All were saved none the worse for their long swim, and they realised satisfactory prices in the sale ring next day.
