Friday, December 11 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Lighting Restrictions Refusal to switch off the lights of his shop during the black-out trial on the night of November 26 resulted in Hector Leslie Smith being charged with a breach of the emergency lighting regulations.— Sergeant O'Carroll explained that the defendant refused to extinguish the light although on three occasions he was warned by a constable to do so. He stated that "he would not be bothered with such foolery," and gave as an excuse for his refusal that a warden had told him his lights were in order.—Stressing the seriousness of the offence, the magistrate imposed a fine of £lO, with an alternative of four days' imprisonment. Petrol Sent by Rail Stated by the prosecution to have sent four gallons of petrol to a friend in Christchurch, Hector Loudon Strang was charged with forwarding dangerous goods by train. With him, John Callum Stevenson was charged with assisting in the commission of the offence. —Stevenson, Sergeant O'Carroll told the court, had hired a rental car while on holiday in Christchurch, and at his request Strang had sent him a tin of petrol enclosed in a box labelled paint.—On behalf of Stevenson, Mr O. G. Stevens said that his client accepted full responsibility for the offence, and pointed out that there was no suggestion that the petrol had been illegally obtained.—Stevenson was fined £2 10s, and costs, and Strang was convicted and ordered to pay costs (10s). Mine Manager Fined For failing to appoint an electrician to supervise the installation of electrical machinery in a coal mine of which he is manager, James Dunlop was fined £2, and costs. t Attempted Bribery A charge against Stanley Robert Phillips of being in possession of liquor in the vicinitv of a dance hall was dismissed.—Phillips was stated by the prosecution to have offered £1 to the constable who arrested him, stating " This ought to fix things," and a further charge of offering a bribe to the police was preferred against him.—On this count he was fined £lO, in default 21 days' imprisonment. Motorists Charged Charged with failing to give way to traffic on his right, James Mcßride was fined £2, and costs, the conviction to be endorsed on his licence.
Lyle Earle Thomson was fined 15s. and costs, for failing to carry a warrant of fitness, and 7s 6d, and costs, on a charge of being an unlicensed motor driver.
