SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Field Day.—A field day was held at the linen flax factory at Finegand yesterday, when there was a good gathering of farmers and other residents. Demonstrations were given on the processing of linen flax, an industry which is now of considerable interest to the people of South Otago. The Department of Agriculture is co-operating with the factory authorities in various districts in arranging these field days. High School Break-up.—The annual break-up and prize-giving ceremony took place at the South Otago High School yesterday afternoon and was well attended. The Rev. D. C. Herron, of Knox Church, Dunedin, was the principal speaker. The duxes of the school for 1942 were Patricia Doggart and Patricia Wilson (equal). Parish Priest Honoured.—To mark the occasion of the silver jubilee of the ordination of Father Rooney, parish priest of Milton, solemn high mass was celebrated in St. Mary's Church on Wednesday morning. Monsignor Delany presided, and the mass was celebrated by Father Woods, of Riversdale. The deacon of the mass was Father Phillips, CM., of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, and the sub-deacon was Father J. Fenton, of Wrey's Bush. The master of ceremonies was Father C. E. Ardath, of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. The occasional sermon was preached by Father Spillane, of Palmerston. In the evening the school room was packed for a social gathering, over which Mr M. Kreft presided. Mr P. M. Keppel welcomed the visitors on behalf of the congregation, and after reading an address from the congregation he asked the guest to accept a substantial cheque as a token of goodwill from the parishioners. Presentations were also made by Miss K. Casey (Children of Mary), and J. Lynch (Hibernian Lodge). Father Collins, of Dunedin, thanked those present for an enjoyable function. A suitable response to the good wishes expressed was made by Father Rooney, who received more than 100 telegrams, including one from each of the bishops in the Dominion. OWAKA Returned Services' Association.—Mr J. C. McLachlan (vice-president) presided at the monthly meeting of the sub-association of the R.S.A. at Owaka on Monday evening. The business included a discussion on a letter received from the parent association in Dunedin on the subject of rehabilitation. Notification was received of a conference of all branches to be held in February next. The Dunedin Executive also gave notice of its intention to visit all branches in the near future.
